Jean-Noël Orengo in India

Jean-Noël Orengo, author of La Fleur du capital (Stock) participated in Mountain Echoes Literary festival 2016. He is also the recipient of Mission Stendhal, an author’s residency programme funded by Institut français, for his literary project in Auroville.

How is Mountain Echoes festival different from the others?

The country, the hospitality, the people, the quality of the debates, the mountains, the rivers, the youth, the connection between the secular and the sacred, the Himalayas, the fabrics: everything is exceptional, each aspect linked to the other, it is an experience as a whole.

You are in Pondicherry to prepare your next novel, where does your curiosity for Auroville come from?

It dates back to my readings when I was a teenager. Auroville is the end of a long path that brought European people to India. In XXth century, with the idea that knowledge and light comes from the East, Alain Daniélou, Giacinto Scelsi, René Guénon, Arnaud Desjardins, Satprem, all went eastward. Some stopped in Egypt, Persia, Nepal, China, others in India. Mirra Alfassa inaugurated Auroville in 1968. Only in India was such a project possible. 2000 people live there now, half are Indian, the other half comes from all parts of the world. They keep experimenting, it is a laboratory. Another reason for my visit to India is the fact that if India is a patriarchal society, on the sacred level, goddesses are everywhere and nowhere else do they have such power.

Is India inspiring for a writer?

India is a superpower of creation and destruction. The amount of information that the brain has to process here is more than you could imagine anywhere else. We get destroyed, reconstructed, regenerated. We can watch from afar, or choke, or bloom. There is a phenomenon that you also find in Thailand upto some level: things change but don’t change at all. See the movie L’inde fantôme de Louis Malle (1969). The dance room in Madras. You will see images from today.
